Substation contract design engineer/designer

Southern company services transmission – substation engineering

Work location

This position will be based out of birmingham, al, however candidates living outside of the area may be considered with the expectation that they could successfully telework and would be willing to travel to work and/or field location on a routine (to be determined) and as-needed basis.
This position will require a mix of both field and office work.
Some office work can be performed remotely (telework/work from home).

Job summary

The substation contract design engineer/designer position is focused on assuring the quality and timely delivery of substation design packages and materials for projects contracted for the opco’s served by the groupThis position will require some travel (approximately 10%)Relocation assistance may be provided if the successful candidate does not currently live within a reasonable commute distance.

Job responsibilities

Make project contract design assignments based on capabilities of contract firms
Contractor development – provide feedback on contractor performance to contractors and contract design supervisor
Participate in scope validation for contracted opco projects
Perform periodic quality reviews of contracted projects
Provide support to construction and field personnel for contracted projects
Update project progress using primavera
Lead regular progress update meetings with contractors, to ensure projects are on schedule
Participate in opco scheduled update meetings, providing updates on contracted projects
Provide orientation and other support for new contractors
Issue and manage work authorizations
The majority of work for this position is done in an office or remote work environment with some day/overnight travel for site visits and meetings with a priority emphasis on safety
This position will support southern company storm restoration efforts
The position will be focused on control design, but could include some physical design responsibilities

Job qualifications

Education

Bs engineering degree electrical/mechanical (ee or eet preferred or associate degree with applicable experience)

Experience

Experience in substation control design or protection and control field services is required
Autocad & autocad electrical experience is preferred
Project management experience is strongly preferred
Scheduling experience with primavera (p6) is a plus

Knowledge, skills and abilities

Understanding of substation protection & control scheme operation, is required
Strong computer, time management & excellent communication skills (oral & written) are required
Knowledge of basic electrical power system theory is required
