Position summary the lowell sun, a subsidiary of medianews group, is seeking an assistant regional sports editor to join the team! you’ll contribute meaningful work for three well-respected newspapers including the the boston herald, lowell sun and fitchburg sentinel & enterpriseYou’ll work remotely in massachusetts with a fantastic team of dedicated journalists committed to quality journalismJob duties

Manages and oversees editorial sports production and copy for the boston herald, lowell sun and fitchburg sentinel & enterprise.
Edits sports stories submitted by reporters for web and print on a daily basisServes as the main regional sports editor two nights a week.
Communicates with reporters to ensure completeness and accuracy of storiesUnderstands their role as an editor is critical to preserve the credibility and trust of the boston herald, lowell sun and fitchburg sentinel & enterprise.
Demonstrates technical expertise and creative flair by designing pages for all three sports sectionsDesigns compelling and attractive back sports page for the boston herald five nights a week and maintains sports page stories and photography on the website.
Posts and edits breaking news stories and plans stories and budgets in advance, works with the copy desk to ensure other elements of the paper, including news, are covered when needed.
Gathers, prepares and posts score results for the newspaper and onlineConstructs local round-ups/agate and prepares weekly coverage schedule.
Uses social media to engage and grow digital audience and drive readership digitally and in print.
Collaborates with editors, reporters and photographers on concepts, features, long-term reports, budgets and projects.
Demonstrates strong knowledge of sports and is enthusiastic about contributing to the success of the editorial sports department.
May periodically write stories, features or breaking news as needed to support the newsroom during times of critical business needs.
Other duties as assigned in order to support the newsroom in breaking news by daily deadline.

Work experience

Five (5) years of work experience editing copy at a daily newspaper is required.
Five (5) years of work experience in a sports-focused role at a professional media organization is required.
Three (3) years of digital and print layout work experience is required.

Competencies & skills

Strong command of the english language including excellent grammatical skills necessary for writing and editingThis person must have strong editing skills across a variety of story types.
Strong proficiency in using technology including pcs, social media platforms and smart phones.
Demonstrated proficiency in utilizing editorial content systems and page layout design applications is requiredExperience using wordpress and adobe indesign are preferred.
Excellent interpersonal communication skills and relationship skills are required.
Time management skills are criticalThis position will be required to promptly edit content, follow-up with journalists to obtain clarity on submitted copy and post stories by daily deadlines.
Must be able to work autonomously and collaborate with other editors, journalists and colleagues throughout the region and across medianews group.
Must be able to multitask and organize ideas, thoughts and work throughout the day, week and defined coverage period.

Required education

High school diploma or equivalent required.
College degree or completed coursework in journalism or related field strongly preferred.

Work environment

This position is remote but the person must live in the state of massachusetts for easy access to sports events, teams, players, coaches and fansOn rare occasions, there may be a need for this person to work in a reporting capacity covering newsworthy events, breaking news or assist with critical business needsThis role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers and smart phones.

Travel

Assistant regional sports editor is expected to travel approximately 5% of the time.
