What you`ll do

Vox.com is looking for a weekend editor to join our teamThis editor will be responsible for guiding the site`s coverage and managing a recurring weekend writer each saturday and sunday.

The ideal candidate will have a deep interest in politics, policy, and world news, but will also be comfortable assigning and editing stories that center on identity, science, health, and cultureOur weekend the team may need to explain democratic backsliding in europe one weekend; the next, how a natural disaster is affecting the residents of a given state; the next the ways a given democratic state is navigating the end of roe; and the next the fallout of a massive breaking news event — anything from a mass shooting to a peace deal.

The work is often fast paced — speed, accuracy, and flexibility are important: our weekend team is the first to respond to major news that breaks on weekends.

This is a part-time position that requires working full days (8 am et to 5 pm et) on weekends.

Your duties will include:

Select and assign stories using news judgment and analytical tools
Edit at least one story by the weekend writer each saturday and sunday, occasionally editing pieces filed by weekday writers on weekends
Assist writers in:

Developing sharp frames that fit into vox`s story approaches/formats,
Creating ledes that emphasize clarity,
Thinking through story structure
Crafting strong headlines

Choose tasteful and news appropriate lead and embedded photos
Create social copy (for twitter and facebook), and work with social media editors as necessary on sharing work via other social media sites
Collaborate with the weekend copy editor on style, standards, and scheduling
Learn to interpret our metrics platform, and use that information to make assignments
Work with other editors and writers across the site during events requiring special coverage (i.e., a weekend legislative session, a natural disaster, national emergency)
Write distinctive stories during the week that bring clarity to major global and washington events
Assist politics/policy editors with staff and freelance copy

Who you are

We`re looking for someone with:

1-2 years editing and writing experience
Strong news judgment
An analytical nature, and a creative approach to angles
A knack for crafting concise, engaging headlines
Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
Passion for world, politics, and policy news
Excellent communication and managerial skills
