The u.sGeological survey (usgs) serves as a national catalyst for the organization and distribution of biological, hydrological, geological, and geographical information and addresses the specific needs of the department of the interior and its land and resource managersThe usgs is the nation`s largest water, earth, biological science and civilian mapping agency, working in cooperation with more than 2,000 organizations across the country with numerous international communities to provide reliable, impartial, scientific information to resource managers, planners, and other customers and partners.
The national geospatial technical operations center (ngtoc) is the primary operational component within the national geospatial program (ngp), the largest program within the u.sGeological survey in terms of appropriated funding, with an annual appropriated budget of approximately $70 millionThe ngtoc provides world-class geospatial technical expertise and customer service for the usgs and the nation through fulfilling its responsibilities within the ngpIt is responsible for the acquisition, assessment, and integration of geospatial data in support of the national map , oversight of geospatial data products and services contracts, quality assurance and quality control of products and data produced via contract or by other entities outside of the ngtoc, providing government furnished materials to support contract production, development of national standards and data models to support the national map , and providing technical assistance to usgs geospatial liaisons and state, local and private sector partners.
As an it specialist with ngtoc, some of the duties include:
Serves as the primary point of contact for planning, design, and implementation of new and improved enterprise it systems in the aws cloudWorks with service managers and product owners to balance and prioritize services to meet overall customer requirements, constraints, and objectivesProvides oversight in determining how information systems should work and how changes in conditions, operations, or the environment will affect these outcomes.
Coordinates with higher authority on the development of systems and application policies, guidelines, standards, requirements, and procedures.
Serves as subject matter expert for planning, installation, configuration, testing, implementation, and management of aws systems environment in support of the organization`s it architecture and business needsDevelops and executes detailed test plans.
Writes scripts of increasing complexity to optimize the functionality of the operational cloud environmentConducts security scans on the cloud environment and mitigates vulnerabilities and risksWrites and maintains technical service documentation and standard operating procedures (sops).
Provides expert advice, counsel, and instruction to employees, supervisors, and management on appropriate levels of aws system operations and availability based on critical system functions and ensures that system requirements identify appropriate disaster recovery and continuity of operations requirements.
Establishes and maintains strong relationships with internal and external counterparts from multiple it disciplines to lead reviews of service performance reports identifying any significant issues and variancesEnsures that appropriate service-level agreements and underpinning contracts have been defined that clearly spell out a description of the service and measures for monitoring the service.
