The accounting associate, reporting to the director of accounting, is part of the finance team, which provides institutional financial management and financial reportingThis role is responsible for ensuring timely and efficient payment of the operating expenses and liabilities flowing through accounts payable related to a $55m operating budget.
Essential duties & responsibilities
Utilize relay`s erp system to coordinate daily accounts payable operations for payments to external vendors and internally to relay employees for expense reimbursementsApprove invoices submitted for payment, ensuring that amounts and supporting documentation adhere to relay`s expense policyInitiate payments (checks or ach)Reverse canceled transactions.
Become the subject matter expert for finance and support the relay community in their usage of the expense modules within our erp system, providing customer support and troubleshooting as requiredResolve and investigate inquiries from employees and vendors.
Maintain positive pay with jp morgan to ensure only properly authorized checks are allowed to be cashed at the bank, to mitigate fraud.
Oversee relay`s credit card process from start to end and liaise with all amex credit card holders to support them through their role in the process and troubleshoot issues and questionsReview and reconcile the submitted credit card reports by user ensuring that amounts coded in the ledger tie directly to the total per that month`s amex statement, and review all accompanying support to ensure that purchases supported a legitimate relay business purpose and adhere to our fiscal policies.
Perform monthly accounting activities and reconciliations for suspense accounts, making general journal entries to the ledger where necessary, and assist with year-end close proceduresParticipate in year-end activities and ensure adherence to proper cut-off by booking accruals.
Work directly with hr and programs to monitor purchase orders for consultants and leasesUtilize purchase order reports to determine amounts due for payment and create the payment requests to initiate the payment process, ensuring timely payments are made.
Collaborate with other finance team members to produce backup materials and schedules for annual audits.
Leverage your exceptional eye for detail to maintain organized, accurate and secure accounting records and backup at all times, performing rigorous quality control checks and account reconciliation projects with accuracy.
Perform other related duties as required and assigned.
Qualifications
First and foremost, the accounting associate must share relay`s sense of urgency about the need to improve student achievement through phenomenal teacher and leader trainingAdditionally, candidates for the position must have the following:
Bs in accounting required
Familiarity with not for profit accounting and a strong desire to work in the not for profit and higher education sector
Ability to self-manage and work autonomously in self-directed work
Strong organizational and communication skills with a service-oriented mentality and a desire to help others
Strong problem solving and critical thinking skills paired with an innovative mind-set and an eye for continuous improvement
A high level of attention to detail
Strong excel skills

Compensation
Relay`s compensation philosophy is to pay competitively for the education nonprofit market and ensure equity across the institutionStarting compensation for the role will depend on a number of factors including the new hire`s qualifications and their region`s cost of labor.
The starting salary range for this role is $50,000 to $60,000The hired candidate can expect to be placed within this range based on their prior experience, as well as the cost of labor for the region they live inNew hires typically are not eligible for a salary at the high end of this range if they live in a region with a low or medium cost of laborLastly, relay is striving towards internal pay equity throughout our organizationBecause of this, we do not negotiate salary offers.
